The One – a 100,000 Square Foot Mega Mansion

In early 2020, a new house was completed in Bel-Air, Los Angeles, and the first steps were taken in the search for a potential buyer. But this was no run-of-the-mill, two-up, two-down new-build. In a land where big is, if not always beautiful, then at the very least something to be actively aspired to, it has been labelled both the world’s biggest and most expensive home.

Unfortunately, the title of world’s most expensive home is now in some doubt after the asking price apparently dropped by $150 million during the pandemic. It’s now a snip at just $350 million.

Size matters

At either 100,000 or 105,000 square feet, depending on which report you read (and let’s face it, at this scale, what’s the odd 5,000 square feet between friends?), The One is about 1½ times the size of The White House and about twice the size of Bill Gates’ home. It boasts 360-degree views that include the Pacific Ocean, the city of LA and the San Gabriel Mountains, and contains 20 bedrooms, 30 bathrooms, five swimming pools, a 36-seat cinema, four bowling alleys (why stop at one when you’ve got in excess of 100,000 square feet to fill) and the ultimate essential for any modern home, a nightclub.

At the time of writing, a serious buyer is yet to come forward, which is very bad news for the developer.

Concrete dreams

Depending on your point of view or your trade, there are various ways of looking at this story. Your interest might lie in a fascination with the mega-rich, you might be a student of architecture, or maybe you just like nosing around other people’s homes. In all three cases, you’re going to love the video tour available online:

Our main thought is that there’s an awful lot of concrete gone into building that house. As Essex’s No.1 concrete and aggregates supplier, with no little experience of providing concrete delivery services on major building projects, even our eyes mist over at the thought of winning such a contract.

We can only imagine the line of concrete pump trucks winding their way along Sunset Boulevard and up the hills to Bel-Air – not to mention the line of grab trucks following on shortly afterwards to clear the site up.

It’s unlikely that anyone is going to be tempted to build something akin to The One in Wickford, Essex, where we are based, but at Neil Sullivan & Sons Ltd, we don’t just aspire to help build palaces for the incredibly rich. We provide concrete services for projects of all sizes across Essex and the South East of England. If you would like to know more about our full range of services, then get in touch today and we’d be happy to discuss your project and see how we can help.
